Mallorca: Costa keeps PSOE talks open despite Vox

Antoni Costa keeps the Balearic government's talks with the PSOE open after Vox called for relations with the Socialists to be cut. The vice-president made his position clear at the Balearic Parliament in Palma, Mallorca, on 9 September. He said the government would continue speaking and reaching agreements with every group in the chamber.

Costa told Vox MP Sergio Rodríguez that the left had sought a cordón sanitario around Vox throughout the parliamentary term — a move to isolate the party politically. The government had never accepted that demand, he said, and it was now Vox asking for the same kind of exclusion against the PSOE.

Rodríguez said the stability and wellbeing he believes have been achieved during the term were down to Vox support. He argued that Spain's situation was so serious that the Balearic government should not make deals with the Socialists.

Costa said he shared the criticism of Spain's central government. But he insisted that the Balearic government must defend the interests of people in the islands whoever is in power in Madrid. That requires keeping contacts, holding talks and negotiations, and at times making demands and complaints, he said.
