Mallorca Senate vote: Vox drops its own candidate
Mallorca and the rest of Spain’s Balearic Islands will have no separate Vox candidacy in the Senate election on 29 November: a candidate linked to Vox will instead join the People’s Party (PP) list as an independent. Vox and PP hope their deal will help them win 125 to 140 of the 209 seats at stake. Vox leader Santiago Abascal defended the pact on Tuesday, 27 October, in Plasencia, Cáceres province, saying his party’s autonomy remained “intact”.
Where the parties are standing aside
Vox is also dropping its own Senate candidacies in Las Palmas, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Valencia, Cádiz and Castellón. Candidates linked to Vox will appear as independents on PP lists in all six places, including the Balearic Islands.
In 14 other provinces, Vox will put forward just one candidate. PP will not stand in Guipúzcoa, Gerona or Tarragona.
What the deal could change
The parties say the arrangement is meant to make more of right-wing votes and counter a pact between PSOE, Frente Amplio and regional left-wing parties. Their target would bring them closer to the three-fifths Senate majority needed to renew Spain’s Constitutional Court or General Council of the Judiciary.
Abascal insisted Vox and PP remain “very different”, pointing to disagreements over deregulation and “remigration”. Vox says the candidates on PP lists are independent of PP, even though they are linked to Vox.
