Mallorca: Vox seeks zero places for migrant children

About 900 migrant children are in the care systems run by the Balearic Islands’ island councils, prompting a row in Palma, Mallorca, on Tuesday 22 September. Vox says the regular capacity for taking in foreign minors should be zero. The party’s Patricia de las Heras said the system was overloaded.

Antònia Estarellas, the Balearic Government’s minister for the presidency, government action coordination and local cooperation, said Madrid should not decide how many children the islands can receive. Spain’s central government has set the ordinary capacity at about 400 places, while the regional government puts it at about 80.

Estarellas defended the Balearic Government’s court challenge to the distribution system for migrant minors. De las Heras argued that the government was contesting only how children are shared out, rather than the model itself.

Estarellas said children are best placed with their families. She also accused Vox of failing even to challenge the system in court in some autonomous communities where it is part of government.
