Spain’s waiting-list figures face new scrutiny in Madrid on Friday, 23 October, as health minister Mónica García brings a proposed royal decree to the Interterritorial Council of the National Health System. She wants to stop the figures being altered or made to look better. Before the meeting, she challenged health officials from the People’s Party (PP) to choose transparency over secrecy.

García said waiting lists should help officials track the care people need, not serve as a tool for election campaigns. The issue, she said, is people’s health and lives.

The council is also due to discuss an update to Spain’s rare diseases strategy for 2026 and care for people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). García said her ministry aims to pass further royal decrees before the next elections, including changes to employment terms for health sciences trainees and plans for future health emergencies or pandemics.

Other proposals have stalled, she said, including measures on alcohol and minors, tobacco and employment conditions in public healthcare.
