Ibiza sea forum tackles warming seas and seagrass

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Ibiza and Formentera’s warming seas put seagrass, invasive species and extreme weather on the agenda as the eighth Marine Forum opens on Wednesday 21 October at Sa Peixateria. Presenter Jacob Petrus and meteorologist Isabel Moreno are among those taking part.

Ibiza & Formentera Preservation says the Mediterranean is warming faster than most of the world’s seas. It points to changes in posidonia seagrass, the arrival of invasive species and weather episodes it says are becoming more extreme.

The opening day will examine the state of the marine environment, funding for conservation projects and the effect of anchoring on posidonia seagrass meadows. Esteban Morelle-Hungría of Universitat Jaume I will present MarPITIUS, a project studying the combined impact of human pollution on the islands. Petrus speaks at 19.30 in a talk titled ‘Una crisis sin precedentes’ (‘An Unprecedented Crisis’).

The forum ends on Thursday 22 October with a screening of ‘Ocean with David Attenborough’. All events are free and open to the public.
