Mallorca water firm loses five-year fight over data

Alcúdia, Mallorca: Water supplier Acasa loses a fight lasting more than five years over access to drinking-water records, Unidas Podemos says on 29 September. Spain’s Supreme Court rejected the company’s final appeal in early September, according to the party.

The dispute began in January 2021, when José Manuel Aranda, then a Unidas Podemos councillor, asked Alcúdia council for water test results, details of how Acasa ran the service and a valuation of its assets. The council did not reply. After further complaints, the Transparency Commission ruled that the information should be provided.

Acasa did not hand over the documents, Unidas Podemos says. It challenged the council’s demand at the High Court of Justice and lost, then took its case to the Supreme Court.

According to Unidas Podemos, the ruling confirms that water users can request information even when a company runs the service in practice without a concession contract. The party had previously raised concerns about nitrate contamination and the lack of such a contract in Alcúdia’s water supply.
