Mallorca water: €713 million projects face pressure

Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, faces calls to speed up water projects as €713 million in infrastructure work is planned across the islands. At a meeting on 27 October 2026, the Mallorca Hotel Federation (FEHM) and the Balearic Chemical Industry Cluster (Cliqib) pressed for faster work and continued investment. Leaks in water networks, sewage treatment and reuse were all on the agenda.

Plans for supply and treatment

Joan Calafat, the Balearic government’s director general for water resources, said €322 million had gone into the water system over the past two years. The planned work includes an overhaul of the seawater desalination plant in the Bay of Palma, progress on a sewage treatment plant for Can Picafort and Playa de Muro, and a new supply pipe between Petra and Manacor. The government is also pushing ahead with three new desalination plants, on Mallorca, Menorca and Eivissa.

Calafat said deep-rooted water problems could not be fixed within one government term. He called for investment over several years and better management of local networks. FEHM representative María Durán said water management was a concern for the whole region, not just tourism.

Meters track use and faults

In Calvià and 11 municipalities in Mallorca’s Pla area, 36,000 remotely read water meters have been installed, according to Desirée Marín of Veolia. The technology provides information on use and helps spot faults. It can also help monitor water sources and quality, and support sewage treatment management.

Those at the meeting asked when planned investments would happen. They raised the need for pipes in Alcúdia, the renewal of networks and action on water losses. They also sought information on how water reserves are changing and what that means for a reliable supply.
