Mallorca Weather Warning: Orange Heat Alert, Storms and Waves

Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Islands, is under an orange heat warning on Thursday, 20 August, issued by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET). Storm and wave alerts are also in place for the island as unsettled conditions move across the region.

AEMET expects cloudy skies, showers and thunderstorms in the Balearic Islands, with some storms potentially intense and accompanied by hail. A frontal system crossing northern Spain, together with colder air aloft, is driving the unstable weather pattern.

Storms and rising temperatures

The forecast allows for temperatures above 35C and overnight lows above 20C in Mediterranean coastal areas and the Balearic Islands. Temperatures are expected to edge up across the archipelago.

Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera also have heat, storm and wave alerts. Menorca additionally faces a rissaga warning, referring to sudden sea-level fluctuations in harbours and coastal waters.

South-westerly winds and coastal conditions

Moderate south-westerly winds are forecast for Mallorca and the other Balearic Islands, although very strong gusts cannot be ruled out. Wave warnings cover Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera.

The wider outlook for eastern Spain and the Balearic Islands includes showers and thunderstorms that may be locally strong, while hail is possible during the more active storms.
