Mallorca weather: heavy rain could hit this weekend

Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Islands, could see heavy rain from Saturday afternoon as storms spread across the archipelago. Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) expects the heaviest rain on Sunday, when downpours could persist. Temperatures are also forecast to fall across Spain over the weekend.

Weather service Meteored says Saturday’s rain in the Balearics could come with thunderstorms, hail and strong gusts of wind. Its meteorologist Samuel Biener says some places in the islands could receive more than 100 l/m2, though that remains a possibility, not a firm forecast.

A stretch of low pressure over mainland Spain and a possible isolated area of low pressure high in the atmosphere are driving the unsettled outlook. High pressure near the British Isles and the North Sea will also bring in colder air.

For Mallorca, the key uncertainty is where the heaviest rain will fall. Aemet says the position of the weather systems could change both the areas affected and the amount of rain they receive. It recommends following forecast updates over the coming days.
