Mallorca weekend rain possible as Catalonia faces flood risk
Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, could see rain this weekend: storms in Catalonia, Spain, may bring more than 100 l/m2 in two or three hours on Monday, 28 September, with local flooding possible. Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) says the greatest risk is in the provinces of Barcelona and Tarragona from late afternoon into the evening.
Cold air is arriving on Monday, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures across much of central and southern mainland Spain. In Catalonia, more than 40 l/m2 could fall in under an hour. Large hail and fierce gusts could bring down branches and trees.
The risk continues on Tuesday. Catalonia could see similarly heavy rain and further local flooding, while a tornado or waterspout is possible along its coast.
For Mallorca, the change may come later. Temperatures across the Balearic Islands could top 32ºC on Wednesday. If the forecast holds, rain could spread across much of mainland Spain and the islands on Friday and over the weekend, with some places seeing heavy showers. Temperatures should ease overall, but Aemet expects mild rather than cold weather.
