Mallorca weekend storms: Balearics face heavy rain
Mallorca and the rest of the Balearic Islands face potentially very heavy thunderstorms this weekend. Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) says storms could strengthen on Saturday afternoon, with more heavy showers possible from early Sunday. On Friday, 2 October, Ibiza and Formentera face very heavy rain that could cause local flooding and sudden rises in watercourses.
Friday’s rain reaches the islands
Aemet also warns of possible hail and very strong gusts in areas at risk of Friday’s heaviest showers. On the mainland, the rain has already brought more than 200 litres per square metre to parts of southern Tarragona. Tortosa recorded 162 litres per square metre in six hours, while Torreblanca, in Castellón province, recorded 119 litres per square metre over the same length of time.
Red weather alerts were in force for southern Tarragona and the Castellón coast until at least midday on Friday.
More storms forecast for the Balearics
Thunderstorms are expected to build again across the Balearics on Saturday afternoon and could become very strong. Aemet says the heaviest showers that day are most likely in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands.
On Sunday, parts of the islands could see further very heavy showers from early morning. Rain around the Mediterranean is expected to ease on Monday as the more intense showers and storms shift to other parts of mainland Spain. Aemet says the outlook from Tuesday remains uncertain.
