Mallorca’s island council wants a Western Sahara referendum after more than 50 years of waiting: on Thursday, 8 October, it says its delegates raised the demand at Spain’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York. The council says the Sahrawi people must be able to decide their own future.

Social welfare councillor Guillermo Sánchez and Magdalena Ramis, the council’s director of centres and programmes for children and adolescents, also took part in the United Nations General Assembly’s Fourth Committee, which deals with politics and decolonisation. Sánchez calls for a just and lasting settlement, more humanitarian aid and stronger protection of Sahrawi rights.

Ramis says people and families have lived with uncertainty for decades. She urges the international community to help secure decent living conditions and a future the Sahrawi people can choose. The delegation wants Western Sahara to stay on the international agenda, with action to follow statements. It also attended a conference in New York on international law and the United Nations peace process for Western Sahara.
