Mallorca wildlife rescue stays open in 2027 shake-up

Wildlife rescue across Mallorca and the Balearic Islands is set to keep running when its management changes on 1 January 2027. Staff now working through the private Natura Parc Foundation for the Consortium for Recovery of Balearic Fauna, known as Cofib, will transfer to a new public foundation.

The Balearic Government is making the switch as its agreement with Natura Parc ends on 31 December 2026. Agriculture Minister Joan Simonet said the service would not stop and that its existing projects and staff would continue.

Talks aimed at extending the current deal failed to produce an agreement that the Agriculture Ministry considered affordable for the administration and compatible with the legal framework. The new public body is intended to give the service a stable structure while retaining the team’s more than two decades of experience.

Temporary premises will be made available so the service can remain fully operational from 1 January, according to Anna Torres, director general for Natural Environment and Forest Management. The present contract with Natura Parc remains fully in force until the end of 2026.

The ministry also plans permanent public wildlife recovery centres on every island, with construction expected to begin during 2027. The new model is intended to cover the recovery and conservation of wild animals, action against invasive species and biodiversity protection.
