Ibiza sets 10pm winter curbs on some night lights

22.00 in winter: some lights on the island of Ibiza, in the Balearic Islands, must dim or go off under rules approved on 30 October 2026. In summer, the restricted period starts at 00.00; both periods last until sunrise. The Island Council of Ibiza says the rules cover the whole island and its neighbouring islets.

When lights must go down

The rules apply to public and private outdoor lighting, as well as indoor lights that shine outside. Lamps must use only the light needed and aim it where it is needed. When no activity is taking place, they must stay off unless there is a justified safety reason.

The council also sets limits on light directed into the sky or nearby homes. Signs and screens must meet the requirements for their area.

Four zones, with fines for breaches

Ibiza is divided into four zones according to how much protection each needs from light pollution. The most protected zone includes protected natural spaces; a separate zone for urban areas with heavy commercial, leisure or night-time travel activity is reserved for exceptional cases.

Breaches can bring fines. Minor offences carry penalties from 215 to 860 euros, while the range for the most serious runs from 4,300 to 86,000 euros.
