Mallorca's region has Spain's lowest work absence rate

Across Mallorca and the rest of the Balearic Islands, work absences account for 5.5% of agreed working hours in the second quarter of 2026 — the lowest rate of any Spanish region. Staffing company Randstad reported the figure on Wednesday, 30 September, using data from Spain’s National Statistics Institute. The Balearic rate is unchanged from a year earlier, while Spain’s average stands at 7.2%.

Sick leave and the busiest sectors

Sick leave accounts for 4.4% of agreed working hours in the Balearic Islands, down from the same quarter last year. The rate across Spain is 5.6%.

Services have the islands’ highest overall absence rate, at 5.7%. Industry follows at 5.1%, while construction has the lowest rate, at 4.3%.

How the rest of Spain compares

Spain’s overall absence rate rose by 0.2 percentage points from a year earlier. More than 1.6 million people missed work on an average day during the quarter, according to the report.

Asturias and the Canary Islands each recorded a 9.0% absence rate, followed by the Basque Country at 8.7%. Madrid and La Rioja were closer to the Balearic Islands, both at 6.3%.
