Mallorca exploitation arrests over €60-a-day work

National Police arrested two business owners in Palma, Mallorca, on 18 September over claims that workers without work or residence permits were paid about €60 at the end of a day. The men are suspected of offences against workers’ rights and the rights of foreign citizens. Police said they had identified three alleged victims.

According to the investigation, the employers recruited people who had no permission to work or live in Spain, taking advantage of their need for work. Most had approached the industrial units looking for jobs or had heard that the businesses hired people without regular status.

Witnesses told police the conditions were abusive. Some workers had dependants to support, police said.

Employees with regular status were entitled to holiday, severance pay and normal working conditions, according to police. Those without regular status were denied those rights and received about €60 after each working day.

Officers inspected the site where staff loaded goods and found irregularities involving five employees. One was in an irregular situation and some were not registered with Social Security. Police also said some did not hold driving licences, although the business transported goods.
