Ibiza workers face up to three sanctions a day

Workers on Ibiza and Formentera have been receiving an average of two to three disciplinary sanctions a day since mid-August, trade union CCOO says. On 16 September, it said hotel staff had been hit hardest as the tourist season draws to a close, although cases were also appearing in other sectors. The union alleges that employers are using the proceedings to cut staff without paying compensation.

CCOO says some workers have received a string of warnings in quick succession for reasons it considers absurd or disproportionate. It claims firms are building up disciplinary records that can lead to dismissal within weeks, while avoiding the costs of other forms of redundancy.

The union says some staff do not challenge the sanctions because they fear conflict or do not have enough time. It alleges that employers are taking advantage of this to build a case for disciplinary dismissal, leaving workers without compensation.

CCOO advises affected workers to write “no conforme” on the sanction letter, add the time and date, and ask for a signed and stamped copy. It also says every sanction should be challenged, especially where the period allowed for objections is short.
