Mallorca yacht clubs: PP vows legal protection
Mallorca’s yacht clubs could gain recognition as serving the public under Spain’s ports law: the People’s Party (PP) pledges to change the rules ahead of the 29 November election. At a meeting with boating industry representatives in Palma, Mallorca, on Monday, 2 November, the party’s Balearic candidate for the Congress of Deputies, José Vicente Marí, set out the proposal.
Why the rules matter to yacht clubs
Marí argues that yacht clubs should not be treated solely as competitors for port contracts because they carry out work in the public interest. A Balearic law already recognises the public value of these facilities and allows contracts to be awarded directly in some cases. He wants national law to do the same.
He also wants environmental requirements to reflect the size of a port facility. Dredging at a small yacht club, he said, should not face the same requirements as work at a major port.
What else the PP wants to change
The PP says it will seek solutions for port contracts granted before 1992 and their extensions. Its proposals also include discounts of up to 15 per cent on port fees and changes to mooring management.
Marí says the party’s 28 amendments to earlier port and maritime legislation would form the basis of its plans. For Mallorca’s yacht clubs, these remain election pledges: the vote is on 29 November.
