91.6% at Spanish beaches know yellow bin for cans

At six Spanish beaches, 91.6% of those surveyed picked the yellow bin as the right place for drinks cans. Cada Lata Cuenta published the findings in Madrid on Friday, 18 September, after surveying 5,299 people. Santa Cruz de Tenerife recorded the highest result, with 96.1% answering correctly.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria followed on 91.8%, ahead of Málaga on 91.6%, Cádiz on 91.1% and A Coruña on 90.8%. Santander had the lowest figure of the six locations, at 89.1%.

At every beach, at least three in four respondents said they always or almost always recycle their cans while there. A Coruña led that measure on 95.2%, followed by Santander on 84.5% and Santa Cruz de Tenerife on 82%. Cádiz stood at 79.7% and Málaga at 77%.

Nearly half of those surveyed, 48%, named cans among the packaging they use at the beach. Cada Lata Cuenta said aluminium can be recycled repeatedly without losing its properties, meaning a correctly sorted can can return as a new one.

The organisation collected the responses during beach awareness work with local councils. Its teams explained how to recycle drinks cans and where to find collection points.

The figures were released ahead of World Clean Up Day on 20 September, a United Nations-recognised day focused on waste and more responsible waste management. Cada Lata Cuenta said the campaign was intended to discourage littering and keep recycling habits going away from home, including at beaches.
