Mallorca housing row: Balearic rent at 124% of young pay
Mallorca’s youth housing policy is under fire: average rent across the Balearic Islands costs 124% of a young person’s monthly pay, the Socialist Party (PSIB) says. On Thursday, 22 October, the party accused the Island Council of Mallorca of failing young people trying to leave home. It cited figures published by the Balearic Youth Council.
Only 8% of young people in the islands manage to live independently, according to the figures cited by the party. Half of those who do share a flat. The PSIB says a young person on the current average wage would have to save every penny of their pay for 26 years to afford the deposit to buy a home.
Joan Méndez, a Socialist councillor and leader of the PSIB’s youth wing on Mallorca, said the island government had scrapped direct help for young people moving out. He also accused it of taking no effective action on housing or independent living during its term.
The PSIB says it has submitted 96 proposals and amendments for the island’s youth plan. They include restoring direct help, encouraging affordable rents and giving young people financial protection.
