Social housing for young people: 79 groups press parties
79 organisations are pressing parties in Spain to expand social housing for young people before the 29 November election. In a statement datelined Madrid on 3 November, the Network of Organisations for Youth Independence (FEPA) also calls for more rent help and a state payment to help young people live independently.
The groups say housing is the starting point: without a stable home, other efforts to help young people live independently will not work. They want more public and social housing, places to live for young people leaving the care system, and action against discrimination in housing. FEPA says those barriers particularly affect care leavers and young people from migrant backgrounds.
Support should not stop at 18, the network says. It wants continued help for young people who have been in care, as well as protection and support for those who migrated alone.
FEPA also proposes a joint plan involving the state, autonomous communities and local authorities, alongside measures to improve access to education, work and healthcare. It wants young people involved in shaping and assessing those policies, and the right to live independently recognised in Spain’s Constitution and at European and international level.
