German Doctor Mallorca: Specialists, Practices and Billing at a Glance

If you're a resident or long-term holidaymaker looking for a German-speaking doctor on Mallorca, there are essentially three routes available: the public Centro de Salud with your EHIC or Residencia card, a private German-speaking practice or clinic, or a doctor's house call directly to your finca, hotel or yacht. Over the decades, a dense network of German-speaking specialists has established itself on the island – from Palma through the southwest to the villages further inland. This guide shows you which specialities are available, where specific practices are located with address and contact details, what a house call costs, and how to settle the bill with your health insurance. At the end you'll find a checklist and answers to the most frequently asked questions – from booking an appointment to the question of how you yourself could practise as a doctor in Spain.

Do you need support with registration, insurance or official procedures around your move to Mallorca?

Three routes to a German-speaking doctor

For non-life-threatening complaints – infections, stomach and intestinal problems, minor injuries, repeat prescriptions – you essentially have three options available. In the event of a life-threatening emergency, always use the European emergency number 112, free of charge and reachable around the clock, even without a SIM card on any mobile phone.

Route Who uses it Language Billing
Centro de Salud (public) Residents with social security, holidaymakers with EHIC Not always German/English Via EHIC or social security
Private practice/clinic Residents, holidaymakers, self-payers Mostly German, English, often also Spanish Private invoice, reimbursement depending on policy
Doctor's house call Holidaymakers, people with limited mobility, families with children German, English Private invoice paid on the spot, reimbursement possible

Note: For minor complaints, the pharmacy (farmacia) can also be a first, uncomplicated point of contact before you even need a doctor's appointment.

Specialities: who treats what

The German-speaking practices and specialist centres in Mallorca cover a broad spectrum – from general medicine to specialists and specialised fields such as tropical medicine or Lyme disease diagnostics. The range on offer varies from practice to practice, with larger centres bundling several specialities under one roof.

Anyone looking for a particular specialist without a specific practice in mind can find a broad overview of German and German-speaking doctors of all specialities on the island via doctor directories such as the Best of Mallorca portal – from psychotherapy to dentistry to internal medicine, with practices in Palma, Palmanova and Cala d'Or, among others.

Doctor's house call: hotel, finca, yacht

When getting to a practice is difficult – for example with small children, after an injury, or when you're confined to bed on holiday – a house call is the practical alternative. Several providers in the south-west of Mallorca specialise in this.

Provider Medical licence/background Service area Price
Doc-Mallorca (Henrik Venus) Licensed in Germany 2021 Port d'Andratx, Magaluf, Santa Ponsa, Paguera, Palmanova, Puerto Portals, Bendinat, Illetas, Camp de Mar, Costa de la Calma, Calvià 350–450 € depending on time of day, daily 8am–10pm
Dr. med. Jens Hertig Licensed 2000 (University of Göttingen), anaesthetist/intensive care physician Hamburg, qualified in emergency medicine, emergency doctor; missions with Doctors Without Borders (Liberia, Haiti), ship's doctor (NCL), Royal Flying Doctor Service Australia Mobile, house, hotel and yacht service Mon–Fri 7:30am–6:30pm, Sat/Sun 9:30am–1pm; after that only on request, surcharges apply on weekends, public holidays and at night

This is how a house call typically works:

  1. Get in touch by phone or WhatsApp – you'll usually get a response within a few minutes.
  2. The doctor comes to you – at the hotel, the finca, the holiday flat or aboard the yacht.
  3. Treatment, a prescription if necessary, and a detailed private invoice are issued on the spot.

Please note: A house call does not replace an emergency call. In a life-threatening situation, always dial the 112 – a private doctor is intended for non-life-threatening complaints.

Billing, costs and insurance

Private medical services are almost always billed via a private invoice – you pay on the spot (card or cash) and then submit the invoice to your travel or international health insurance. Whether and to what extent costs are reimbursed depends on the respective tariff; some insurers also offer direct billing.

Payment method Who is affected What needs to be done
EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) Holidaymakers from the EU Present at the Centro de Salud, no advance payment necessary
Private travel insurance Holidaymakers without public healthcare access Collect invoice, submit after the trip
Private health insurance (residents) Emigrants, self-employed people Clarify scope and direct billing with the insurer in advance
Self-payers Without suitable cover Settle the private invoice on the spot

Residents should fundamentally clarify whether they are covered via the Spanish social security system, a private policy or – for pensioners from Germany – via the S1 form. You can read more about this in our guides on health insurance in Spain, on the S1 form Spain and on the healthcare system in Mallorca in general.

If you want to practise as a doctor on Mallorca yourself

Not only patients, but also licensed German doctors regularly move to the island to set up practice there. Historically, there were two routes for this: the classic homologation procedure, in which the qualifications acquired during your studies are compared in detail with the Spanish degree programme, and – since the 1990s, in the course of EU-wide mutual recognition of higher education qualifications – a simplified procedure called Reconocimiento de Títulos for holders of EU higher education diplomas, which according to reports at the time proceeded significantly faster.

Note: For recognition, the following documents were traditionally required, among others: certificate of the state medical examination, proof of medical licence (Approbation), if applicable proof of preparatory time as a medical assistant, a certificate from the relevant federal ministry, and a certificate from the regional medical association confirming that no criminal or disciplinary proceedings are pending – each notarised and translated into Spanish. As EU directives and procedures have evolved since then, you should contact the relevant medical association or the Colegio Oficial de Médicos (COMIB) in the Balearics directly for the current requirements.

Anyone specifically planning this route will find background on the recognition of foreign professional qualifications in our guide Recognising professional qualifications in Spain. At the same time, questions around autónomo registration and bookkeeping are usually also relevant for setting up a self-employed practice – see Bookkeeping for autónomos in Spain.

Emergency or doctor's appointment – when to go where?

A doctor's appointment or home visit is suitable for non-life-threatening complaints: infections, gastrointestinal problems, minor injuries or repeat prescriptions. In the case of signs of a genuine emergency situation, every minute counts.

Situation Correct point of contact
Fever, cold, gastrointestinal issues Private practice, Centro de Salud or home visit
Repeat prescription, follow-up examination Private practice by appointment
Minor injury, bruise Private practice, home visit or emergency medicine department
Chest pain, shortness of breath, unconsciousness Immediately 112
Serious injury, suspected stroke Immediately 112

Most common mistakes

Many patients underestimate how different the three routes are in terms of language, waiting time and billing – and thereby lose time or money.

  • No invoice requested: Without a detailed private invoice, reimbursement by the insurer is usually not possible.
  • Reimbursement not clarified in advance: The scope of cover and any direct billing arrangement should be clarified with the insurer before treatment, not only afterwards.
  • Home visit mistaken for an emergency: A private doctor's home visit does not replace an emergency call – always dial 112 in a life-threatening situation.
  • Opening hours not checked: Especially outside core hours, some providers charge surcharges, or only a telephone enquiry is possible.
  • Language barrier underestimated: Not every public Centro de Salud has German- or English-speaking staff – this is worth clarifying in advance.

Checklist: Finding a German-speaking doctor on Mallorca

  1. Clarify whether it's an emergency – if so, call 112 immediately.
  2. Decide whether a public Centro de Salud, a private practice or a home visit is the right fit.
  3. Choose the appropriate specialty and a practice near your home or accommodation.
  4. Get in touch by phone or WhatsApp and arrange an appointment or home visit.
  5. Have your insurance card (EHIC) or insurance documents ready.
  6. After treatment, keep the private invoice and submit it to your insurer.
  7. If needed, clarify follow-up appointments or referrals to specialists.

What comes next?

After the first doctor's visit, many residents face the question of long-term cover: staying privately insured, switching to the Spanish social security system, or – for German pensioners – using the S1 form. Registering with the local healthcare system (Tarjeta Sanitaria) and the general registration as a resident are also closely linked. Our guides on Residencia Spain and on Empadronamiento Mallorca will help you tackle the necessary steps in the right order.

Conclusion

Thanks to a long tradition of German-speaking doctors – especially in Palma and in the southwest of the island – Mallorca offers a dense network of practices, specialists and home-visit services. For residents, it's worth clarifying your insurance situation in advance; for holidaymakers, the EHIC or a straightforward private invoice with subsequent reimbursement is often enough. Anyone wanting to practise as a doctor on the island themselves should get in touch early with the relevant medical association about the current recognition procedures. In any case, remember: for genuine emergencies, only 112 counts – all other routes are intended for everyday medical care.
