Care Home Mallorca: Residencias, Care Services and Costs at a Glance
Anyone growing old on Mallorca, or bringing parents and parents-in-law over to the island, sooner or later faces the same question: what happens if care becomes necessary? The range of care homes on Mallorca is more limited and in some cases less transparent than in Germany – German-speaking residencias are rare, public places are scarce, and many families ultimately opt for a combination of home-based ambulatory care and a private care home place for when it's really needed. This guide shows you which residencias actually exist, what a place costs, how ambulatory care services work, which public facilities are being built, and what you need to watch out for regarding German long-term care insurance abroad.

Overview of care options on Mallorca
On Mallorca, there are basically three ways to organise care in old age: private residencias with their own care section, ambulatory care services that come to people's homes, and – much less common – public care homes run by the Balearic administration. The private route is the most developed on the island, since many foreign residents spend their retirement here and generate corresponding demand. Public facilities, on the other hand, are chronically overstretched, and waiting lists are the norm.
For German-speaking expats, what matters most is whether German is spoken in daily care, whether there is a dedicated care ward with a doctor on site, and how transparent the pricing structure is. You should ask about all three criteria specifically at every facility before making a decision.
Note: If you're not yet registered as a resident, it's a good idea to sort out your health insurance status at the same time – this also affects access to public care. More on this in the guide Health insurance Spain and in the overview of the Healthcare system Mallorca.
Comparing residencias on Mallorca
The number of private senior residences with a dedicated care section is limited on Mallorca. The best known, and staffed with German-speaking personnel, is Residencial Es Castellot in Santa Ponsa. In Palma, meanwhile, Las Arcadias General Riera offers a model of assisted living with a health centre, which is more geared towards more independent seniors. In Andratx, a public facility is currently being built.

| Facility | Location | Places | Special feature | Contact |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Residencial Es Castellot | Santa Ponsa | 66 apartments plus 16 care places in its own care section | Dedicated care ward, doctor on site, 24-hour care, German/English/Spanish | +34 971 691 409 |
| Las Arcadias General Riera | Palma de Mallorca | 73 apartments (buy or rent) | 24-hour health centre, restaurant, spa, chapel | 97 176 35 81 |
| New state care home | Andratx | 60 residential units (under construction) | Public facility, foundation stone laid February 2025 | Andratx Municipality |
Please note: Public and semi-state facilities such as the one in Andratx are usually intended first and foremost for residents of the respective municipality with Empadronamiento. Without Empadronamiento, your chances of getting a place drop noticeably – so register at your place of residence as early as possible.
Es Castellot in Santa Ponsa: the best-known German-speaking residence
The Residencial Es Castellot is located under pine trees directly by the sea in the southwest of Mallorca and positions itself clearly in the premium segment. Many residents come from a similar background – former finca owners or parents of children living on Mallorca. The apartments range from 50 to 86 m², feature a balcony or terrace and sea views, and small pets are welcome. Alongside classic residential apartments, there is a dedicated care area with 16 places for people with higher care needs, as well as 24-hour care.
| Room type | Size | Occupancy | Price per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio | approx. 40 m² | Single occupancy | 2.000 – 2.400 € |
| Double apartment | 50 – 60 m² | Single occupancy | 2.300 – 3.000 € |
| Double apartment | 50 – 60 m² | Double occupancy | 3.000 – 3.800 € |
All prices as stated by the operator, without guarantee – please ask the residence directly for current terms and additional costs.

A trial stay of a few days to several weeks is possible before deciding on a permanent move-in – you should make specific use of this during your search to assess the atmosphere and quality of care for yourself.
Las Arcadias General Riera: assisted living in Palma
Anyone who would rather live independently while still remaining within easy reach of medical care will find a different model at Las Arcadias General Riera in Palma: 73 housing units for purchase or rent in a prime location, five minutes' walk from the Plaza de España and around 15 minutes from the airport. Rather than a classic care home, the concept works more like a senior residence with full-service care.
| Facilities | Details |
|---|---|
| Type of housing | 73 one- and two-bedroom flats, for purchase or rent |
| Medical care | 24-hour health centre on site |
| Security & service | 24-hour security, cleaning, laundry service |
| Leisure | Restaurant, library, spa & massage, fitness room, chapel, garden |
Address: C/ Reverend Sitjar, 4, 07010 Palma, Illes Balears Telephone: 97 176 35 81
This model is particularly suited to seniors who are still largely independent but would like access to a health centre on site if needed – unlike Es Castellot, the focus here is not on a separate care unit with dedicated care places.
Outpatient care and home-based support
Not everyone wants or needs to move into a residencia. Outpatient care services bring support directly to your own finca or flat – a model that is particularly widespread on Mallorca among long-term residents, as many prefer to stay in their familiar surroundings.
| Provider | Main area of service | Location | Contact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Senior Mallorca | Shopping, personal hygiene, mobility assistance, household cleaning | Palma de Mallorca, island-wide | +34 971 100 733 |
| Manuela Dratschew – Home Care | Home care and support | Mallorca | via web contact |
The approach of ambulatory services such as Senior Mallorca deliberately differs from the classic care home: instead of taking people out of their familiar surroundings, professional support comes to them – from shopping to help with personal care and mobility support. For many families, this is the first step before even considering a Residencia.
Note: Anyone who employs a household helper or carer directly instead of booking through a service provider must register them correctly with the Social Security in Spain. Details on this can be found under Registering household help in Spain.
Public care homes and waiting lists
Public or semi-state care homes are considerably rarer on Mallorca than private Residencias, but new ones continue to emerge. In Andratx, the foundation stone for a new state care home with 60 modern housing units was laid in February 2025 – a project the residents of the municipality had already been waiting for since 2022. The Balearic Minister for Family and Social Affairs, Catalina Cirer, took part in the ceremony.
Such projects show two things: firstly, there is a noticeable need for affordable care places on the island, and secondly, the implementation of public projects often takes several years. Anyone hoping for a state place should get information early from the relevant municipality and the Balearic Ministry of Social Affairs, rather than waiting until an acute need for care arises.
Caution: For public facilities, expect realistic waiting times ranging from several months to years. In the meantime, private Residencias or ambulatory care are often the only practical solution.
Cost comparison: Mallorca versus Germany
In 2026, a care place in Germany costs, on average, significantly more out of pocket than many expect – and personal contributions continue to rise. According to an analysis by the Association of Substitute Health Insurance Funds (vdek), people in need of care moving into a German home now pay an average of 3,245 euros per month themselves, 261 euros more than at the beginning of 2025.
| Cost item (Germany, 2026) | Amount per month |
|---|---|
| Facility-uniform personal contribution (EEE), 1st year | 1.685 € |
| Accommodation & meals | 1.046 € |
| Investment costs | the same amount for all residents of the respective facility, regardless of length of stay |
| Average total personal contribution 2026 | 3.245 € |
The German long-term care insurance fund subsidises the EEE portion on a graduated scale according to length of stay:
| Year of stay | Care insurance fund subsidy towards the EEE |
|---|---|
| 1st year | 15 % |
| Year 2 | 30 % |
| Year 3 | 50 % |
| from year 4 | 75 % |
By comparison, the prices at Residencial Es Castellot range from 2,000 to 3,800 euros per month – depending on room size and occupancy – which is in a similar range to the German co-payment, albeit without a comparable statutory subsidy structure such as that offered by German long-term care insurance. This makes a direct comparison difficult: anyone who, as a German resident, is entitled to German long-term care benefits should check in advance exactly whether, and to what extent, these benefits are also paid during a stay in a Spanish residencia.
Long-term care insurance and health insurance as a resident
For German emigrants, the question regularly arises as to how German long-term care insurance and the Spanish healthcare system relate to one another. As a general rule: anyone who, as a pensioner, is covered by Spanish health insurance via an S1 form should simultaneously clarify which entitlements from German long-term care insurance remain in place and how these can be claimed while abroad. Since the two systems are structured differently, it is worth seeking individual advice from a specialised insurance broker or social security provider before permanently relocating or deciding on a residencia.
Note: You can find basic information on cover as a resident in our guides on the S1 form Spain and on health insurance Spain.
German-speaking points of contact
Besides the residencias themselves, church congregations and consulates on Mallorca have traditionally been the first ports of call for questions relating to care and retirement homes – many families receive practical, first-hand recommendations here.
| Point of contact | Address | Telephone |
|---|---|---|
| German-speaking Protestant Community in the Balearics | C/ Bellavista H, 3, 07600 S'Arenal | 971 743 267 |
| German-speaking Catholic Parish Mallorca | C/ Forn de L'Olivera, 5, 07012 Palma de Mallorca | 971 264 551 |
| Convent of the Niederbronn Sisters | Carrer de ses Monges, 20, 07590 Cala Ratjada | 971 564 139 |
The German Consulate on Mallorca can also help with questions about care facilities and German-speaking staff, particularly when it comes to points of contact in crisis situations.
Step by step to the right care place
- Clarify needs: How much care is currently needed – assisted living with services, outpatient support, or a care unit with medical provision?
- Check language and proximity: Should German-speaking staff be available, or is English/Spanish sufficient?
- Contact facilities directly: Prices, available places and waiting times are rarely fully visible online – a phone call or email is always worthwhile.
- Arrange a trial stay: Residencias such as Es Castellot offer short trial stays before a permanent move-in is decided.
- Clarify the Empadronamiento: For public offers and many social benefits, registration at the place of residence is a prerequisite.
- Clarify insurance questions: Check early on which benefits from German long-term care and health insurance are recognised in Spain.
- Fix the contract and costs in writing: Have all cost components – rent, care, meals, additional costs – confirmed in writing before you sign.
Most common mistakes when searching for a care home on Mallorca
Many families underestimate how long the search for a suitable place takes, and only start once care becomes urgently necessary – leaving hardly any time for a trial stay or a price comparison. Another common mistake is relying solely on verbal price quotes instead of having all cost components confirmed in writing. The question of registration is also often neglected: without Empadronamiento, the chances of getting a public or partially state-funded place drop considerably. Finally, too few relatives clarify in advance which German insurance benefits actually apply abroad – which later leads to unpleasant surprises when it comes to billing.
What happens after the decision?
Once a place has been found, an individual care and support plan usually follows, which many Residencias draw up together with relatives – including arrangements for outings, accompaniment and special wishes. At the same time, you should clarify who will act as the contact person for medical decisions, especially if relatives do not live permanently on the island. It is also worth settling questions around power of attorney, will and estate early on – topics that follow their own legal rules in Mallorca.
Note: Anyone wishing to settle their inheritance and last will for Spain will find the basics in the guide Spanish Will. Also helpful in an emergency is our guide Death on Mallorca.
Checklist: Care home Mallorca
- Realistically assess your needs: assisted living with services, outpatient care, or a care area with medical supervision?
- Compare at least two to three facilities, including price structure and additional costs
- Arrange a trial stay before deciding on a permanent move-in
- Clarify the language of the care staff (German, English, Spanish)
- Settle Empadronamiento and health insurance status in advance
- Specifically check benefits from German long-term care insurance abroad
- Have the contract, including all cost components, confirmed in writing
- Determine a contact person for medical emergencies and power of attorney
Conclusion
A Care home in Mallorca is doable – but the choice is smaller and the pricing structure less standardised than in Germany. Private residencias such as Es Castellot in Santa Ponsa offer German-speaking care and their own nursing wing, Las Arcadias in Palma is geared more towards more independent seniors, and public projects such as the one in Andratx show that state-run offerings are growing too – albeit with long lead times. Anyone who plans ahead, gets prices fixed in writing and clarifies insurance questions in advance saves themselves and their relatives a great deal of stress should the worst happen.
