Punta Puntxes is not a classic sandy beach but a rocky swimming spot below the Cala Blava residential area on Mallorca’s south coast. Flat rock slabs replace a broad sunbathing area, steps with a handrail lead down to the water, and there is practically no tourist infrastructure. This simplicity is precisely what defines the place: you come here to swim, snorkel and enjoy the view—not for sun loungers, a beach bar or an organised leisure programme. The Bay of Palma opens up before you, while behind you the rugged rocky coast rises towards the residential area.

The coastal point is also called Punta de ses Punxes, Punta de ses Puntes or Pas de ses Barques. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue places it between the small coves of Ses Lleonardes and Can Mercadal; the official Balearic Islands tourism portal names Caló de Ses Lleonardes and Caló Fort. Rock dominates the shoreline. Official and specialist beach descriptions differ regarding the amount of sand: the Balearic Islands beach catalogue mentions a small amount of sand, the Illes Balears tourism portal describes the spot as having no sand, and Mallorca.com refers to a very narrow strip of sand. You should therefore not rely on finding a soft beach area. Punta Puntxes is better suited to confident swimmers and snorkellers than to families with toddlers.

Where is Punta Puntxes beach, and what is it like?

Punta Puntxes lies below the Cala Blava residential area in the municipality of Llucmajor and overlooks the Bay of Palma. Carrer de Deusto 7, 07609 Llucmajor, is used as the navigation address.

The swimming spot itself is located on a rocky coastal headland with a small inlet on the left. Cliffs, flat rock slabs and a narrow, rugged shoreline define the setting. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue classifies this stretch of coast as part of the rocky landscape typical of Mallorca’s southwest and south. Wind, sea currents and the mouths of seasonal streams have created a series of small, abrupt indentations here.

The different names can cause confusion when navigating or using maps. Punta de ses Puntes is the name used by the official island portal; Punta de ses Punxes and Pas de ses Barques are also common. Punta Puntxes is another shortened form.

The spot is used mainly by residents of the Cala Blava residential area. Disfruta la Playa classifies visitor levels as low. However, this does not mean that there is a spacious sunbathing area: the usable rock slabs are much more limited than at a broad sandy beach.

How do you get to Punta Puntxes, and where can you park?

You can reach Punta Puntxes by car through the Cala Blava residential area and follow Carrer de Deusto. The official Balearic Islands tourism portal identifies this street as an area where cars can be parked nearby; Disfruta la Playa describes parking in the surrounding area as easy. However, you should not take this to mean that there is a large, managed beach car park.

From the road, you continue on foot. The final section leads down to the swimming spot via steps with a handrail. Bicycles must be left at street level because the descent is not suitable as a rideable access route. According to Disfruta la Playa, the beach is not accessible to wheelchair users.

Sources give different distances from Llucmajor. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue states 15 kilometres, while the official Balearic Islands tourism portal gives 22 kilometres. For the actual journey, the address on Carrer de Deusto is therefore more useful than a general distance figure. From Palma, the Illes Balears tourism portal gives a distance of 17.9 kilometres and recommends following signs to the Cala Blava residential area.

Note: Plan for steps on the final section. Even if you find a parking space near Carrer de Deusto, there is no step-free access to the water.

Is there sand, and how do you enter the water?

Punta Puntxes is predominantly rocky, and you should not expect a reliable sandy area. Flat rock slabs provide space for your towel, while steps with a handrail lead into the water.

Descriptions differ regarding the amount of sand. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue mentions a small amount of sand, Mallorca.com refers to a very narrow strip of sand, while the official Balearic Islands tourism portal and Disfruta la Playa describe the swimming spot as having no sand. All classifications agree on one point: rock clearly dominates, and Punta Puntxes is not a sandy beach in the usual sense.

Sturdy footwear or water shoes are expressly recommended. This applies both to walking across the rocks and to entering and leaving the water. There is no consistently soft shoreline where you can comfortably walk barefoot into the sea. The sunbathing areas also consist mainly of rock slabs, so a well-padded mat is advisable.

The Balearic Islands beach catalogue expressly considers the beach unsuitable for toddlers. Although the Mallorca.com directory also generally lists Punta Puntxes as family-friendly, the rocky surface, stair access and lack of lifeguards make it unsuitable as a typical beach for small children.

Warning: Expect rocks, limited comfort along the shore and an entry point where sure-footed footwear is helpful. If you are looking for a sandy beach, Punta Puntxes is not the right choice.

What are the water, swimming and snorkelling like?

The water is described as clear and ranging from turquoise to deep blue, while the rocky underwater landscape is suitable for snorkelling. According to Mallorca.com, some fish can even be seen without diving equipment.

The rocky seabed makes Punta Puntxes more appealing to snorkellers than to visitors who want to splash around in shallow water over sand. The official Balearic Islands tourism portal expressly recommends bringing a diving mask or snorkelling goggles. Disfruta la Playa also identifies diving as a recommended activity.

Swimming is possible, but the coastline is exposed. Particularly in relation to boats, the Balearic Islands beach catalogue warns of wind and sea forces from the southwest to the north. This does not provide a general assessment of daily swimming conditions, but it is a clear reason to check the sea and weather carefully before entering the water.

There is no lifeguard service. First aid is also unavailable. You should therefore adapt your swimming distance to your ability and the actual conditions instead of relying on supervised swimming areas.

According to Mallorca.com and Disfruta la Playa, sailing and fishing are permitted only with certain restrictions. There is no designated water sports area or jetty.

What facilities are available at Punta Puntxes?

Punta Puntxes has practically no tourist beach facilities. Disfruta la Playa lists no showers, toilets, kiosk, restaurant, first-aid station, lifeguard service, water sports area or accessible entrance.

No Blue Flag is listed either. Sun loungers, parasols and managed beach areas are likewise not part of the character of this swimming spot. Its appeal therefore lies not in comfort but in the unspoilt rocky coast and direct access to the sea.

There are no restaurants in the immediate vicinity. If you want to stay longer, you will need to bring your own food and drinks. Take your rubbish away with you afterwards and treat the rocky shoreline with care.

The steps with a handrail are the most important built feature at the site. They make the descent easier but do not provide accessible entry. Bicycle access ends at the road. According to Disfruta la Playa, there is also no campsite, playground equipment or pier.

Note: Pack water, food, sun protection, snorkelling goggles, water shoes and a padded mat. You cannot replace missing equipment at a kiosk or beach shop on site.

Is Punta Puntxes suitable for children?

According to the Balearic Islands beach catalogue, Punta Puntxes is not well suited to toddlers. The rocky ground, limited or absent sand, stair access and lack of lifeguards clearly distinguish the spot from a classic family beach.

The Mallorca.com directory does generally list the cove as suitable for families with children. However, this assessment sits alongside the Balearic Islands beach catalogue’s explicit warning regarding toddlers. Your children’s actual experience with rocks, steps and open water therefore matters more than the label “family-friendly”.

Punta Puntxes does not provide the conditions families need if they are looking for a sandy play area, easy shallow entry, toilets or a lifeguard station. Older children who can swim confidently and handle rocky terrain, however, will find clear water and an interesting underwater landscape to explore.

There are no swings or other designated playground facilities. Natural shade is not a reliable feature of the spot either. The flat rocks primarily serve as places to lie down and enter the water, not as a protected play area.

When is Punta Puntxes quiet, and how busy does it get?

Punta Puntxes is considered a little-visited swimming spot used mainly by residents of Cala Blava. Specific seasonal visitor numbers or reliable details about particularly quiet times have not been published.

The limited tourist facilities restrict the range of visitors: anyone looking for showers, restaurants, sun loungers or a sandy beach will not find what they need here. At the same time, the usable area on the rocks is small. Even a modest number of swimmers can therefore be noticeable without the spot being busy in the usual sense.

The official Balearic Islands tourism portal generally associates Punta de ses Puntes with all four seasons. However, this does not provide information about water temperature, weather or safe swimming conditions on a particular day. Because the coast is exposed, current wind and sea conditions matter more than a general seasonal recommendation.

When the sea is rough, the spot loses much of its appeal as a swimming and snorkelling destination. In calm conditions, however, the clear water and views across the Bay of Palma are particularly striking.

What is near Punta Puntxes?

Several other small rocky coves lie nearby along the coast, including Caló Fort, Caló de ses Lleonardes, Sa Pesquera Plana and Calonet de s’Almadrava. Disfruta la Playa gives distances of around 146 to 290 metres.

Caló Fort is listed as being about 146 metres away and Caló de ses Lleonardes around 170 metres away. Sa Pesquera Plana is approximately 225 metres away, while Calonet de s’Almadrava is about 290 metres away. These figures show how closely the small indentations follow one another along this stretch of coast. However, they do not automatically mean that a continuous, developed or easy footpath connects all the swimming spots.

You will also encounter different names when determining the exact geographical location. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue places Punta Puntxes between the small coves of Ses Lleonardes and Can Mercadal. The official Balearic Islands tourism portal instead names Caló de Ses Lleonardes and Caló Fort. Many small coastal features lie close together along this stretch, and several place names are used in parallel.

According to the Balearic Islands beach catalogue, the rocky coastal landscape continues for a long distance: from Cala de Sant Antoni beside the starboard breakwater of Club Nàutic s’Arenal to the sand of Sa Ràpita in the municipality of Campos. The named indentations include Calonets de s’Almadrava, Cap Alt and Es Mollet des Rei.

For boaters, Club Nàutic s’Arenal is the nearest harbour facility. There are no restaurants directly at the swimming spot.

What practical points should you consider before visiting?

You should plan for Punta Puntxes as an unsupervised, rocky swimming spot without services. Shoes with good grip, drinking water, food, sun protection and snorkelling goggles are among the most useful things to bring.

Check the actual sea conditions before entering the water. The coast is exposed, and the Balearic Islands beach catalogue describes it as vulnerable to wind and swell from the southwest to the north. Conditions are suitable for boats only in good weather. Even vessels with a shallow draught may be unable to withstand the incoming wind and sea forces safely.

In good weather, skippers can approach the coast and anchor over visible sandy areas opposite the swimming spot. This option expressly depends on calm conditions. Punta Puntxes is not a sheltered anchorage.

For swimmers, there are neither lifeguards nor first aid on site. Access over steps and rocks requires sure footing. Water shoes help when entering the sea but are no substitute for caution on wet stone.

Disfruta la Playa lists dogs as prohibited. Nude bathing is also listed as not permitted. Fishing and sailing are allowed only with restrictions. Current signs at the entrance always take precedence.
