Calonet Cap Alt

Calonet Cap Alt, also known as Calonet des Cap Alt or Caló Fred, is not a beach for rows of sun loungers or long walks beside the water. Measuring only about 35 metres long and around 3 metres wide, this rocky cove lies near Bellavista in the municipality of Llucmajor, close to S’Arenal and Cala Blava. The Torrentó de Cap Alt flows into the sea here. Together with waves and currents, it has shaped a narrow, V-shaped inlet in the bare rocky coast. There is no sand to spread out on, but you can enjoy views of a rugged coastal landscape and the broad Bay of Palma.

Its appeal lies precisely in this simplicity. Steps lead down to the cove, but there is no beach bar, shower, toilet or lifeguard waiting below. Calonet Cap Alt is therefore better suited to a quick swim, snorkelling or a few quiet hours on the rocks than to a comfortable day at the beach. Beneath the water, sandy areas alternate with rocks and Posidonia. Because the coast is exposed, you should take wind and waves seriously. Pack water, food and water shoes, and do not expect to be able to buy anything there.

Where is Calonet Cap Alt beach?

Calonet Cap Alt lies on the Llucmajor coast by the Urbanización Bellavista, southeast of S’Arenal and close to Cala Blava. The beach is also known as Calonet des Cap Alt, Calonet d’es Cap Alt, Caló des Cap Alt or Caló Fred. These different spellings all refer to the same small coastal inlet.

The cove lies between Calonet de s’Almadrava and Cap Alt. The Torrentó de Cap Alt flows into the sea at this exact spot. According to the Balearic Islands beach catalogue, the small stream also marks the beginning of an uninhabited stretch of coast bordering the Área Natural de Especial Interés des Cap Enderrocat and the military installation of the same name.

It is around 15 to 16 kilometres from the centre of Llucmajor; the official Balearic Islands tourism portal gives a distance of 18,9 kilometres from Palma. For finding your way locally, Bellavista, Cala Blava and the postcode 07609 are more useful than a general distance figure.

Calonet Cap Alt is part of a succession of rocky coastal inlets stretching from Cala de Sant Antoni near Club Nàutic s’Arenal to the sandy area of sa Ràpita. This section contains numerous small inlets, including Cala Blava, Caló de ses Lleonardes, na Plana and es Mollet des Rei.

What kind of beach is Calonet Cap Alt?

Calonet Cap Alt is a very small rocky cove without a sandy beach. Its shape was created by the Torrentó de Cap Alt, sea currents and wave action. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue describes the inlet as V-shaped, rocky and without vegetation.

The key facts show just how compact this swimming spot really is:

The limited width affects your visit more than the length. There is no conventional area for sunbathing, and a large beach blanket is of limited use on the rocky ground. Calonet Cap Alt is therefore more of a swimming spot than a beach in the usual sense.

The official Balearic Islands tourism portal identifies these waters as part of the Bahía de Palma marine reserve. It describes the seabed as a mixture of sand, rocks and Posidonia. This variety makes the cove especially appealing to visitors who would rather explore the water with a diving mask than spend several hours lying on sand.

How do you get to Calonet Cap Alt and where can you park?

You can reach Calonet Cap Alt by car via Cala Blava and then the Urbanización Bellavista. Whether approaching from Llucmajor or Palma, the official Balearic Islands tourism portal recommends first following signs to Cala Blava and then to Bellavista.

There is no large designated beach car park at Calonet Cap Alt. However, the Balearic Islands tourism portal and the beach data provided by Disfruta la Playa state that cars can be parked near the beach or in the surrounding area. No number of parking spaces has been published for the cove. You should therefore pay attention to signs, access routes and property entrances.

Steps lead from the upper coastal area down to the cove. Disfruta la Playa lists steps with a handrail for access. Even so, the route is not wheelchair accessible. Anyone who struggles with steps or requires step-free access should choose a different swimming spot.

The official Balearic Islands tourism portal also mentions travel by public transport but does not specify a route or stop. You should therefore plan a bus journey only with current timetable information and check how far the walk from the nearest stop actually is.

Note: When using navigation, do not search only for “Calonet Cap Alt”. The names “Calonet des Cap Alt”, “Calonet d’es Cap Alt” and “Caló Fred” are also used.

What are the water, entry and swimming conditions like?

The water at Calonet Cap Alt lies above a varied seabed of sand, rocks and Posidonia, but access to the water is over rocky terrain. There is no soft strip of sand or jetty. Water shoes are therefore a sensible precaution, especially if you feel unsteady on uneven ground.

The official Balearic Islands tourism portal describes the water as clean and transparent. Disfruta la Playa also describes the shoreline as shallow. However, you should not interpret this as a guarantee of safety: the cove has neither lifeguard supervision nor a first-aid station, and the coast is exposed to the open sea.

The Balearic Islands beach catalogue particularly warns about wind and sea conditions. The coastal opening is so exposed that winds and waves from southwest to north can become dangerous. This assessment expressly concerns boats, but it is also an important indication for swimmers of the exposed nature of the location.

The cove is interesting for snorkelling because of its underwater landscape. Sandy areas, rocks and Posidonia can be explored with just a mask and snorkel. As the area belongs to the Bahía de Palma marine reserve, you must observe its conservation regulations and leave plants and animals undisturbed.

Warning: There is no supervision. Do not enter the water in heavy surf, strong winds or uncertain current conditions, and do not overestimate your swimming ability.

What facilities are available?

Calonet Cap Alt has no tourist beach facilities. There are no showers, toilets, sun loungers, parasols, kiosk, restaurant or first aid at the cove. Nor is there a water sports area, playground, campsite or landing stage.

Disfruta la Playa also lists neither a Blue Flag nor wheelchair-accessible entry. There is no lifeguard supervision either. Calonet Cap Alt is therefore one of those places where you must organise your entire visit yourself.

Bring enough drinking water and something to eat. The official Balearic Islands tourism portal specifically notes that there are no services at the cove and that visitors should bring their own provisions. You should take your rubbish away with you, as no waste-disposal facilities are listed at the swimming spot.

You also cannot rely on rented shade: parasols are not available. Whether individual rocky areas provide shade at certain times of day is not reliably known. Sun protection therefore belongs in your bag, along with luggage that is as compact as possible and easy to carry down the steps and across the narrow rocky section.

If you would like to eat out after swimming, you should plan to do so outside the cove. No restaurants are listed in the immediate vicinity.

When is the best time to visit and how busy does it get?

Calonet Cap Alt is best visited in calm weather and when the sea is calm. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue considers even approaching and anchoring by boat suitable only in good conditions because the coast is highly exposed. For swimmers, checking the wind and waves is therefore more important than choosing a particular time of day.

There are no reliable seasonal visitor figures for the cove. The official Balearic Islands tourism portal describes it as a peaceful coastal corner, but with an area measuring only about 35 by 3 metres, even a small number of swimmers can severely limit the available space. “Peaceful” therefore does not automatically mean that you will have the cove to yourself.

The Balearic Islands tourism portal lists the location for winter, spring, summer and autumn. However, this does not mean that swimming is advisable at every time of year or in all weather. The specific conditions on the day of your visit remain decisive.

If you are flexible, avoid conditions in which wind or waves are pushing directly into the coastal inlet. Planning a long beach day is of limited value anyway: there are no sanitary facilities, places to eat, lifeguards or comfortable sunbathing areas. Calonet Cap Alt is easier to include in a trip along the Llucmajor coast as a short stop for swimming or snorkelling.

What can you discover around Calonet Cap Alt?

Several other small rocky coves nearby share the same rugged coastal character. Disfruta la Playa lists Mollet de Can Tem des Cafè at a distance of about 331 metres, Calonet de s’Almadrava at around 407 metres, Caló Fort at about 587 metres and Punta de ses Puntes at around 688 metres.

These distances show how closely the inlets follow one another along this part of the coast. However, they do not indicate whether a direct coastal path is currently passable. Calonet Cap Alt itself is not described as the starting point of a designated hike. You should therefore not plan a route between the coves without checking paths and local access information.

Calonet de s’Almadrava lies directly beside it. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue places Calonet Cap Alt between this cove and Cap Alt. Farther northwest are Cala Blava and the coastal areas towards S’Arenal; the nearest marina is Club Nàutic s’Arenal.

To the southeast, an uninhabited section beside the Área Natural de Especial Interés des Cap Enderrocat begins at the Torrentó de Cap Alt. The protected area borders a military installation. You should always respect access restrictions and signs in this area.

If the limited rocky areas at Calonet Cap Alt feel too cramped, the neighbouring swimming spots are possible alternatives. You should check separately whether they offer more space or facilities; this cannot be determined from the short distance alone.

What should you know before visiting?

You should plan for Calonet Cap Alt as an unsupervised natural swimming spot without infrastructure. You must bring your own water, food and sun protection. The steps and rocky ground also make light luggage and secure footwear advisable for access.

Disfruta la Playa lists dogs and other pets as not permitted. Even so, pay attention to current signs, as local rules may change. Naturism is not listed as permitted there either.

According to Disfruta la Playa, fishing and sailing are generally possible subject to restrictions. As the waters also belong to the Bahía de Palma marine reserve, conservation regulations apply. Before fishing or diving, check current permit requirements and geographical restrictions.

Calonet Cap Alt is suitable for boats only in good weather. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue describes the coast as highly exposed to wind and rough seas. Even boats with a shallow draught will not find reliable shelter in poor conditions. In calm seas, skippers can anchor over clearly visible sandy areas in front of the cove; the nearest harbour facility is Club Nàutic s’Arenal.

Families should make a realistic assessment. Although the Balearic Islands tourism portal also places the location in the “family” category, there is no supervision, toilet, sandy area or accessible entry. Whether the cove is suitable for your child therefore depends on their age, sure-footedness and swimming ability.
