Caló Fort

Caló Fort is not a beach for spending a long day on soft sand, but a tiny bathing spot made up of stones and rocks on the coast of Llucmajor. The cove lies in the Cala Blava and Bellavista area, southeast of S’Arenal, and offers views across the Bay of Palma. At only about 20 metres long and five metres wide, there is barely enough space to spread out comfortably. However, at this point on the rocky coast, you can reach the water via a staircase with a handrail.

The appeal of Caló Fort lies precisely in its simplicity: no kiosk, no sunbeds, no showers and no lifeguard. You come here to swim and enjoy the sea view, not for a conventional beach experience. However, different locations and access descriptions appear under the names Caló Fort and Caló des Fort. For the bathing spot near Cala Blava and Bellavista, the official tourism portal of the Balearic Islands lists Carrer del Torneig as the access road and describes access by stairs. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue, by contrast, describes a secluded spot 11 kilometres from Llucmajor, directly at the entrance to Cala Pudent, reached via Capocorb and involving a difficult descent. Before setting off, therefore, check the map location and, for the stair access described here, use Cala Blava, Bellavista and Carrer del Torneig as your reference points.

Where is Caló Fort beach and what is the cove like?

Caló Fort lies on the coast of the municipality of Llucmajor near Cala Blava and Bellavista, between S’Arenal and the stretch of coast towards Sa Ràpita. The official tourism portal of the Balearic Islands places the cove between Punta de ses Punxes and Calonet de s’Almadrava, below the residential areas of Cala Blava and Bellavista. Caló de Can Mercadal is also given as another name.

The coast here consists of rocks and stones. Small pine trees, cliffs and the buildings of the neighbouring residential areas shape the surroundings. Caló Fort is therefore not a secluded natural cove without development, but its small size and lack of tourist infrastructure make it feel considerably simpler than an equipped sandy beach.

The dimensions of 20 by five metres are given by both the official tourism portal of the Balearic Islands and the Disfruta la Playa beach guide. Accordingly, there is not enough room on the shore for the usual spread of towels, parasols and beach bags belonging to many visitors.

How do you get to Caló Fort by car?

To reach Caló Fort near Bellavista, take the Ma-19 to exit 13 towards S’Arenal and Cala Blava. The detailed directions from Disfruta la Playa then lead along the road towards Cala Blava, continuing at the third roundabout towards Carrer del Cap Enderrocat and then via Avinguda d’Augusta to Carrer del Torneig.

The official tourism portal of the Balearic Islands also lists Carrer del Torneig as the road for access, parking and reaching the cove. The portal gives a distance of 18 kilometres from Llucmajor and 19 kilometres from Palma. These details refer to the route to Cala Blava and Bellavista.

Warning: Under the name Caló des Fort, the Balearic Islands beach catalogue lists a different route via Capocorb. It describes the final 300 metres along a paved road and a difficult descent down an approximately 50-metre-high cliff. This description does not match the stair access at Carrer del Torneig. Therefore, check that your navigation destination is actually near Bellavista and Cala Blava.

Access is easiest to plan by car. If you want to use public transport, check the connection, stop and final walking route on the day before setting off, as no confirmed bus service is documented for the immediate access point at Carrer del Torneig.

Where can you park at Caló Fort?

For the access point near Bellavista, a car park is mentioned in front of or near Carrer del Torneig. The official tourism portal of the Balearic Islands describes the parking area as easy to find; Disfruta la Playa refers to a designated car park before you turn into the street.

The number of spaces available there is not stated. You should therefore not assume that parking will be available right next to the stairs, especially on warm days and during the high season.

For the differently described route via Capocorb, the Balearic Islands beach catalogue mentions a free car park but also warns that there is no parking in the Cala Pi residential area. As these details concern a different access route or a differently located coastal inlet, you should not confuse them with the parking at Carrer del Torneig.

Note: When using navigation, enter “Carrer del Torneig”, “Bellavista” or “Cala Blava” as well as “Caló Fort”. This will help you identify whether the route leads to the stair access described here or towards Capocorb.

What are the water, shore and entry like for swimming?

Swimming is possible at Caló Fort, but the stony and rocky entry requires more care than a gently shelving sandy beach. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue describes the shore at Caló des Fort as rugged and full of rocks. For Caló Fort, Disfruta la Playa also confirms that the surface consists of stones and rocks and notes that there is no sand.

The Beaches Searcher beach guide describes pebbles on the shore and seabed, a moderate increase in depth and some sheltered areas of water. It specifically recommends water shoes. They can be particularly useful when entering and leaving the water over rough or slippery surfaces.

According to Disfruta la Playa, there is no lifeguard or first-aid station. Caló Fort also does not hold a Blue Flag. You should therefore carefully assess the weather, waves and your own swimming ability.

Caló Fort is only partly suitable for young children: there is no sandy area, supervision or sanitary facilities, while the shore consists of rocks and stones. Although the stair access near Bellavista has a handrail, the beach profile states that it is not wheelchair-accessible.

What facilities are available at Caló Fort?

Caló Fort has no tourist beach facilities. The official tourism portal of the Balearic Islands explicitly states that there are no services and recommends bringing your own drinks and food.

According to the beach profile from Disfruta la Playa, there are no:

• showers or toilets
• first-aid station or lifeguard
• kiosk or beach bar
• restaurants directly beside the bathing spot
• sunbeds or parasols
• water sports area
• playground
• jetty
• accessible access

No restaurants are listed in the immediate vicinity either. If you want to stay longer, you must therefore bring all your own provisions. In particular, take enough drinking water. This recommendation is even more important if your navigation destination does not end at the stair access and a longer walk is required.

You should not rely on dependable shade either. Although the official tourism portal mentions small pine trees in the surrounding area, it does not identify any shaded area for lying down. Beaches Searcher lists natural shade as a feature, while the Balearic Islands beach catalogue explicitly warns of a lack of shade and intense heat for the differently described access point. It is therefore safer to bring your own sun protection.

When is the best time to visit and how crowded does it get?

Caló Fort is generally suitable for a short coastal visit at any time of year, while swimming depends on the weather and personal preferences. The official tourism portal of the Balearic Islands lists the cove for winter, spring, summer and autumn but does not provide seasonal opening hours or supervised swimming times.

The bathing spot is described there as quiet and mainly visited by residents of the neighbouring residential areas. At the same time, the usable shore area is extremely small at about 20 by five metres. Even a few towels can therefore occupy a considerable part of the available space.

Beaches Searcher rates the crowds during high season as “busy”, while the official description calls it a quiet beach. Because of the limited space, both can be true at the same time: even a modest number of swimmers can quickly make such a small cove feel crowded.

If you want to avoid crowds as much as possible, stay away during typical summer peak times. Before descending, also check whether there is enough room on the shore for your planned stay.

What is near Caló Fort?

Several other small bathing spots lie nearby along the coast, including Punta de ses Puntes, Calonet de s’Almadrava, Mollet de Can Tem des Cafè and Caló de ses Lleonardes. Disfruta la Playa gives their distances as 146, 180, 256 and 291 metres respectively.

The official tourism portal places Caló Fort directly between Punta de ses Punxes and Calonet de s’Almadrava. The different spellings “ses Punxes” and “ses Puntes” come from the respective beach descriptions. Both versions may appear when navigating along the coast.

Other bathing spots in the municipality of Llucmajor listed by the beach guide include Cala Blava, Sa Pesquera Plana, Calonet des Cap Alt, Es Calonet des Fornas, Sa Cova Baixa, Cala Vella and S’Arenal de Llucmajor. This does not include information about the routes, access points or current facilities at these alternatives.

Caló Fort itself overlooks the Bay of Palma. This is one of its clearest differences from the long sandy stretches near S’Arenal: here you stand beside a narrow rocky inlet rather than on a wide, serviced beach.

Where does the name Caló Fort come from?

The name Caló Fort is associated with a historic fortress above the coast. According to the Balearic Islands beach catalogue, this structure stood about 150 metres above the sea and was used to monitor a broad stretch of the cliffs along the Bay of Palma.

The catalogue describes the fortifications as particularly well preserved, but also explains that they are located in a restricted area and cannot be reached. A visit to the fortress is therefore not part of an excursion to the bathing spot.

The name creates further potential for confusion: the official tourism portal also calls the bathing spot Caló de Can Mercadal, while the beach catalogue uses the name Caló des Fort. In addition, the access routes and coastal locations described there differ considerably. The name alone is therefore not enough to identify the intended access point clearly.

What practical points should you consider before visiting?

For Caló Fort, you primarily need water shoes, drinking water, food and your own sun protection. The rocky surface, lack of infrastructure and limited space make compact equipment more practical than extensive beach gear.

Check the location carefully before travelling. For the bathing spot near Cala Blava and Bellavista, Carrer del Torneig, a nearby parking area and a staircase with a handrail are documented. If your navigation instead leads via Capocorb to an undeveloped descent down the cliffs, you have reached the location in the alternative description, for which the Balearic Islands beach catalogue recommends sturdy footwear, enough water and avoiding a visit with young children.

There is no supervision at Caló Fort. The beach profile from Disfruta la Playa lists sailing and fishing as permitted with restrictions but does not identify a dedicated water sports area. Local notices and signs will indicate which rules currently apply.

The same beach profile lists dogs as not permitted. As beach rules can change, you should also check the current signs at the access point. Because there are no facilities, do not leave your rubbish at the cove; take everything away with you.

Warning: The stair access is not accessible. According to the beach profile, Caló Fort is not suitable for people with limited mobility.
