Mallorca: PP seeks lower agricultural diesel tax

The PP in Sa Pobla, Mallorca, will take a motion calling for lower taxes on agricultural diesel to the next council meeting. It wants Spain’s central government to cut the cost burden on farmers and help keep their holdings economically viable.

PP spokesperson Pedrona Seguí said the demand matters especially in Sa Pobla because of the town’s close historical and economic links to farming. Agricultural diesel is essential for tractors and much of the machinery used on farms, the party said, so any rise in its cost hits holdings directly.

The motion also calls for existing tax and support measures to be kept and strengthened. The PP says this would give farmers greater stability when fuel prices fluctuate.

Seguí said farmers cannot be expected to keep the countryside productive and provide quality goods while the cost of doing their work keeps rising. Making farming financially viable is necessary if agriculture, generational renewal and a living countryside are to continue, she said.
