Palma driver hits light at triple limit

A suspected drink-driver in Palma, Mallorca, knocked down a traffic light at about 4.30am on Thursday, then tried to leave in a car too badly damaged to carry on. Palma Local Police said the 28-year-old lost control while turning left from Calle Gabriel Maura into Calle Aragó. A breath test showed 0.84 mg/l of exhaled air — three times the administrative limit and above the criminal threshold.

The car's front-right side struck the traffic light outside number 40 on Calle Aragó. The impact damaged the front-right wheel, steering, bumper, wing and door, leaving the vehicle stranded outside number 41.

Police have told the man he is under investigation for an alleged road-safety offence. The force's reports office has sent the case papers to the investigating section of the on-duty Court of Instance.
