The Balearic Islands’ ports authority in Spain could pay half the usual rate into a shared port fund in 2027: 2.5% instead of 5%. The committee that divides the fund approved an initial proposal on Thursday, 1 October 2026. It covers 47.5 million euros, according to Spain’s state port agency, Puertos del Estado.

Where the fund would go

The inter-port compensation fund would set aside 10.5 million euros for port authorities facing the challenges of island locations, isolation or remoteness. Navigation aids would receive 10 million euros, security work 1.6 million euros and the Puertos 4.0 fund 7.5 million euros. Other criteria account for 17.9 million euros.

The proposed 2.5% rate also applies to the port authorities of the Canary Islands, Ceuta, Melilla and Seville. The proposal does not say how much any individual authority would receive, so it gives no figure for the Balearic Islands.

A separate plan for road and rail

Spain’s Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has also approved an updated programme to improve road and rail links to Spanish ports during 2026. It covers 60 projects worth 1,930 million euros: 43 linked to rail and 17 to roads. Public port bodies are contributing 875.1 million euros. The announcement names no specific project in the Balearic Islands.
