Mallorca's Bar Marítimo: €1m-plus sea-view revamp
Mallorca’s Bar Marítimo in Palma is in line for a revamp costing more than a million euros: the plan replaces a wall with glass to bring back the sea view from Es Jonquet square. The bar, open since 1951, would become a Mediterranean restaurant called Barítimo, with room for 198 people. The Balearic Port Authority set out Marport Sunbeach’s proposal on Thursday, 22 October.
Glass front, familiar food
Architect José María Riera’s design covers 527 square metres of building and terraces. It keeps the load-bearing structure and does not make the building larger. The new glass front would stand on the existing metal frame in Es Jonquet, a protected cultural heritage area.
Barítimo plans to serve food continuously, including local dishes such as variado mallorquín. The lease allows for 11 years of operation.
A lower-energy building
The project aims to lift the building’s energy rating from F to A and bring its energy use close to zero. It also targets zero emissions. Plans include an all-electric kitchen, an aerothermal system with heat recovery for climate control and hot water, and walkable solar panels on the roof to generate electricity for the restaurant.
The operator says it will avoid single-use plastics from its first day and make the ground floor accessible directly from the square. It also plans to employ people with disabilities and recruit locally. Building work is expected to take 24 weeks.
