39 Menorca beaches lose sensors this season

Thirty-nine beaches and coves on Menorca will not get sensors after the Balearic Government dropped a scheme meant to show real-time occupancy during the 2026 tourist season. Més per Menorca said on Friday, 25 September, that the decision leaves the island without the promised figures on how busy those coastal spots are. The party also said cameras promised for vehicle counts at Maó and Ciutadella ports were only partly installed.

Balearic President Marga Prohens announced €4 million in January 2026 to fit sensors at 150 beaches across the Balearic Islands, including 39 on Menorca. The devices were intended to provide live information on beach occupancy during this year's tourist season.

Més per Menorca says the project has now been scrapped. Its councillor Noemí Garcia accused the PP of reaching the end of four summers in government without an effective response to seasonal overcrowding.

Port cameras only partly delivered

Island Council president Adolfo Vilafranca told ferry operators in January that cameras would be installed in the ports of Maó and Ciutadella. They were meant to record vehicles arriving and leaving by sea, providing data to assess a possible future limit.

At the end of June, the Island Council unveiled two cameras at Ciutadella commercial port. Més per Menorca said the tourist season was already well under way and that no cameras were installed at Maó port this season.

Calls for action after four summers

Garcia pointed to a 2023 study by the previous left-wing Island Council which recommended cutting the number of vehicles on Menorca's roads in summer by 30 per cent. She said the PP discarded the report after taking office.

According to Garcia, the strain is visible each summer on roads, car parks, beaches and public services. She said the island needs measures rather than further announcements, after years spent arguing over what data is needed.
