Bunyola cross damaged as climber breaks pillar

A pillar supporting the Bunyola cross broke as a young man tried to climb the monument on the s’Estació coast in Bunyola, Mallorca, during the early hours of 21 September. The man, believed to be about 20, was hurt and needed medical attention at the scene, according to Última Hora. The damage happened during Bunyola’s Sant Mateu patron-saint festivities.

The monument is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC), a cultural-interest designation. The Consell de Mallorca has sent an inspector to examine the cross and the damage.

Island officials have also asked Bunyola Town Hall for a report on what happened that night. The Consell says it will assess the situation and help the council establish any possible responsibility.
