Mallorca school meals kitchen shut: 2,240 affected
On Mallorca, the meal supply for 2,240 pupils at 35 schools is affected: Can Arabí’s central catering kitchen in Binissalem, Mallorca, remains shut until June next year. Balearic health minister Manuela García confirmed the decision on Wednesday, 4 November, at a Balearic parliament health committee hearing. She said repeated breaches, not a single incident, were behind the closure.
Complaints kept coming
School leaders and families have made ten complaints since 2021, García said. In one early case, pupils at a school in Palma reported stomach problems after eating fish. In October 2025, a mistake with a special menu at another Palma school caused an allergic reaction in a child.
The company faced eight sanction proceedings. According to García, it accepted breaches, paid fines and fixed specific problems, but inspectors found almost the same faults when they returned.
Why the kitchen remains shut
An inspection on 8 June 2026 found serious problems with the kitchen’s facilities, operations and its own safety checks, García said. An inspector ordered a temporary closure because of the high risk to public health. The Balearic Islands’ Directorate-General for Public Health confirmed it on 30 June, and a one-year suspension of activity followed as an additional sanction.
Emergency pens for schools
García also set out a new plan for allergic reactions at school. Every public school in the Balearic Islands is to receive two adrenaline pens.
Staff from each school’s local health centre will train teachers to recognise a reaction. After calling the emergency number 061, teachers may give adrenaline under instructions from emergency medical staff by phone while an ambulance is on its way.
