Palma crash: loose heel sends car into tree

Two women suffered minor injuries when their car hit a tree at the Camí de Son Hugo roundabout in Palma, Mallorca, on Tuesday at about 13.45. Both were treated by medics and taken together in one ambulance to a private clinic. The crash left the car stopped in the right-hand lane.

Palma Local Police said the driver lost control near the municipal sports facilities after an unfastened high-heeled shoe came off. According to the driver and officers’ inspection of the scene, this led to a sudden acceleration.

Trying to avoid the vehicle directly in front, she steered right. The car struck the kerb hard before hitting the tree trunk.

Police record negligent driving

Both occupants suffered bruising in the collision. The driver’s alcohol breath test returned 0.0 mg/l.

The police patrol completed its report with an allegation of “negligent driving”, saying the footwear was not suitable for keeping safe control of the vehicle.
