Mallorca car entry cap could start next summer
Mallorca could cap cars arriving through its ports next summer: the People's Party wants lawmakers to pass the plan before the year ends. On Wednesday, 30 September 2026, party spokesperson Núria Riera urges the Balearic Parliament to move quickly. The proposed law would also limit hire cars on the island's roads.
What the car cap would change
The law would allow Mallorca to set a maximum number of vehicles permitted to enter the island, with the limit reviewed periodically. It would also cap hire cars in circulation and introduce a charge intended to deter vehicles that are not taxed on Mallorca. Residents would be exempt from the measures.
Why the party wants the law soon
The People's Party points to a study finding that pressure from vehicles rose by 108 per cent between 2017 and 2023. It says around 400,000 vehicles a year were arriving through Mallorca's ports when the current island council leadership took office.
The party says it held 22 meetings with groups and political parties over ten months, and that no one voted against the proposal on the island council. The council is already preparing to put the law into practice. On Tuesday, councillor Fernando Rubio met Spain's Directorate-General for Traffic in Madrid to discuss access to vehicle registration data needed to apply it. Riera wants the law approved before the year ends so it can take effect next summer.
