Formentera car rules: 94.9% back them, cap divides
On the island of Formentera, 94.9% of survey respondents say rules on vehicle access, driving and parking are needed — but they disagree over the number of daily permits for visitor cars and motorbikes. The Formentera Island Council reported the findings on 6 November 2026.
Traffic improves, but parking feels unchanged
Of those surveyed, 78% call the rules very necessary and another 16.9% say they are somewhat necessary. Respondents give the vehicle-regulation system, formentera.eco, an average score of 7.05 out of 10, based on 58 answers.
Some 59.3% say traffic has improved. A smaller share, 54.2%, report better traffic flow on the main PM-820 road and secondary roads. For parking, protection of the natural environment and experiences in natural spaces, the most common answer is that nothing has changed.
Visitor permits split opinion
The daily limit on permits for visitor cars and motorbikes draws no clear consensus: 42.4% want it lowered, 39% want it raised and 16.9% would keep it as it is.
Five second-home owners took part. Four say the rules are needed, although the group gives formentera.eco an average score of 5.6 out of 10. Comments from participants include proposals to take family members into account for second-home discounts and to distinguish between long and short stays.
Verónica Castelló, the island council’s vice-president and councillor for mobility, said the responses help show how people see the system and what they think needs improving.
