Palma Christmas lights: switch-on moves to Parc de la Mar

Palma’s Christmas lights switch on at Parc de la Mar on 21 November, moving the city’s annual ceremony to the park by the sea. More than €373,000 has been set aside for the show and switch-on. Palma City Council says the new setting is meant to strengthen the city’s link with the sea.

Government spokeswoman Mercedes Celeste said the event will bring together different art forms and promised “many surprises”. She did not say whether Parc de la Mar itself will receive Christmas lighting.

The city council has started the process to contract the artistic, technical and logistical production of the show. Palma City Council, Pimeco and Afedeco announced the move on Wednesday.

60 stalls and an ice rink

The Parc de Nadal Christmas market opens in Parc de la Mar on the same day. It will have 60 stalls and run for 46 days, from 21 November to 6 January.

Plans include a natural ice rink and Christmas food spaces. Local workshops and Mallorcan craft products will also feature at the market.

Children can join a Christmas gymkhana, a challenge that sends families around the site to find the “Set Guardians”, complete tasks and meet characters from the story. Prizes and surprises are planned at the end.

More streets set for Christmas lights

Palma says this year’s Christmas lighting will reach more streets and neighbourhoods across the city. The Parc de la Mar market joins the usual Christmas markets at Plaça Major, Ses Estacions and Las Ramblas.
