Mallorca cemetery yields two Civil War graves

At least two graves at the municipal cemetery in Son Servera, Mallorca, have produced ammunition and items linked to military clothing. The finds connect the burials with fighting in the Battle of Mallorca during the Civil War. The Balearic Government said on Tuesday that it had completed this year’s work in Son Servera under its Fifth Graves Plan.

Archaeologists began excavations in April, carrying out test digs at several points in the cemetery until the end of May. They recorded sections of the site and examined the features of the graves they found.

Work also continued in July at Comellar Fondo in Son Servera, an area identified as a possible burial place for combatants killed during the Civil War. Test digs there did not uncover a mass grave.

Teams returned to the cemetery on 1 September after the summer break. The programme aims to locate, recover, study and identify people who disappeared during the Civil War.
