Spain extends 20-cent diesel aid for farmers and fishers
Spain keeps its 20-cent diesel aid for farmers and fishing boat operators until the end of December as the war in Iran drives up costs. The cabinet agrees the extension in Madrid on 29 September, with €209 million allocated to the two sectors. It also plans further tax relief on petrol and diesel through December.
Diesel and fertiliser support
Of the €209 million for diesel aid, €159 million is for agriculture and €50 million for fishing. Those totals include money approved earlier. The extension adds €52 million for farmers and €15 million for fishing boat operators.
Help with fertiliser purchases is continuing too. Of the €665 million allocated, €494.5 million went to 249,376 farmers in early September. The Spanish Agricultural Guarantee Fund expects to publish its next decision on who qualifies next week.
Fuel tax cuts through December
The government plans a 20-cent tax cut on petrol and diesel in October, followed by 13 cents in November and 6 cents in December. If oil prices rise by more than 15%, the cut would return to 20 cents in November or December.
The Spanish statistics office puts September inflation at 4.9% compared with a year earlier, partly because of dearer fuel. The government has also asked Spain’s competition authority to examine how prices change along the food supply chain.
