Mallorca Ma-20 drink-drive check warns of phone danger

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Mallorca’s Ma-20 becomes the site of a drink-drive check on Monday with a second message for motorists: distractions cause one in three road crashes, says the Balearic traffic chief. The Guardia Civil stops drivers near the Son Hugo swimming pools, where volunteer Carlos Martín speaks to them. The check is part of a road-safety campaign by Aspaym, an association for people with spinal cord injuries and severe physical disabilities, and Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic.

Phone use leads to fines

Distraction is the offence most often found in recent checks, says Fernando Alonso, the Balearic traffic chief. Phone use is the leading reason for fines issued during traffic monitoring and awareness campaigns.

Fatigue is this month’s focus

Aspaym has worked on road-safety campaigns with volunteers and the Guardia Civil since 2007. Its current campaign, called Control con conciencia, focuses this month on distractions, particularly sleepiness and fatigue.

Martín urges the drivers stopped on the Ma-20 to keep their attention on the road. Island journeys are short, he says, but getting there comes first: messages can wait; life cannot.
