Ibiza checks flag seven drug and two drink-driving cases
Seven drivers test positive for drugs in Eivissa, on the island of Ibiza, during weekend traffic checks. Two more test positive for alcohol, and three vehicles are taken to the municipal depot. Eivissa Local Police file 22 reports in all, according to the town council.
Saturday night: three vehicles taken away
Working with inspectors from the Ibiza Island Council, police record six traffic offences and three cases of drug possession in public. They also find one driver who tests positive for drugs and another who tests positive for alcohol. The council inspectors report a passenger transport service for not having the required journey record.
Sunday night: more drivers test positive
With help from Formentera’s K9 dog unit, police identify six more drivers who test positive for drugs and one for alcohol. They also file 19 reports under a public security law and propose 18 penalties for traffic offences, including reckless driving and obstructing traffic. Two further reports concern people seeking customers for illegal transport services.
The checks are part of an extra night shift introduced in early summer. The town council says it supports regular patrols during the busiest nighttime periods.
