Palma electric cars and fire demo on Saturday

Electric cars, inflatable play castles and a fire service demonstration will fill the Llar de la Joventut in Palma on Saturday. The third Sustainable Mobility Day runs from 10.00 to 14.00 as part of European Mobility Week, held from 16 to 22 September. The Consell de Mallorca is organising the event.

The programme includes an electric-vehicle display arranged by the Associació d’Usuaris de Vehicles Elèctrics. It will bring together electric-car brands sold on Mallorca and, according to the Consell, will be the island’s biggest display of its kind.

Bikes, rescue dogs and charging points

Children and young people can bring their own bicycles or scooters to a road-safety circuit led by the Federació de Ciclisme. The instructors will use the course to teach traffic rules.

Bomberos de Mallorca will show how its search-dog unit finds and rescues people. Firefighters will also stage a vehicle-fire response. Melib, the Balearic Government’s public charging network, will run a workshop on charging electric cars and give information on charging points around Mallorca.

The Instituto Mallorquín de Asuntos Sociales will offer activities on safe, healthy school surroundings and a workshop in which children can draw their vision of future mobility in Palma. Eco Rallye Mallorca will screen images of electric vehicles that have taken part in its tests.

Road changes for cyclists

The Consell called its Cyclists’ Road Safety Commission on Monday to review work on Mallorca’s road network and plans for the coming year. Fernando Rubio, the island councillor for Territory, Mobility and Infrastructure, presented the measures.

Completed work includes five pedestrian and cycle routes, among them links from Ses Salines to Colònia de Sant Jordi and from the Forum de Mallorca in Binissalem through Lloseta to Inca. Routes linking Sa Pobla with Crestatx and Andratx with Camp de Mar are in their final stages.

The Consell has also renewed road surfaces on the Ma-14 between Felanitx and Manacor and at points on the Ma-10 in the Serra de Tramuntana. It has improved the roundabouts at Alaró and Son Verí Nou.
