Formentera road safety: fixed speed cameras target crashes
Fixed speed cameras could be brought to the island of Formentera in a push to slow traffic and prevent crashes. On 4 September, Neus Massanet, senator for Eivissa and Formentera, met Consell de Formentera president Óscar Portas to discuss the plan. Massanet said she would work with Spain’s Dirección General de Tráfico traffic authority on possible measures.
Officials will first examine data from the island’s speed-awareness cameras. They will then consider further action aimed at cutting speeds and avoiding accidents.
Sea radar and housing concerns
The meeting also covered the maritime surveillance radar now operating at La Mola. Massanet said stronger detection systems should spot emergencies sooner and save lives at sea.
Massanet and Portas also argued for using every available tool to address the difficulty of finding decent housing on Formentera, including measures under the state Housing Law. Portas said the Govern had sent the island council a study questioning how effective the measure is. The report will be passed to Massanet for analysis.
Tent considered for migrant children
They discussed whether the tent at La Savina could be used in caring for migrant children. Massanet stressed that children follow a separate protection process from adults.
She also called for progress on the Consell’s planned centre for minors. The island should not be left relying only on short-term fixes whenever services become overstretched, she said.
