Fuel prices threaten transport as Spain seeks EU action
Rising fuel prices could wipe out key transport sectors, Spain’s transport minister warns. In Dublin, Ireland, on Monday 21 September 2026, Óscar Puente urged the European Union to give countries more room to respond. He said higher costs must not be passed on to the public.
The informal meeting of EU transport ministers focused on road transport and the oil crisis. Puente linked the fuel-price surge to the start of a war in the Middle East, saying Europe must move quickly with more flexible rules to protect transport-linked businesses.
Ministers also discussed road safety and vehicles that drive themselves and exchange information with other systems. Puente said the planned European mobility data space must allow vehicles, infrastructure and public authorities to share data reliably, while taking account of coordination between regions.
He pointed to recent United Nations regulatory work designed to make clear what autonomous-vehicle makers must meet and verify. EU countries, he added, still share the goal of cutting road deaths to zero.
