Mallorca hotels join €366,000 staff absence drive

Mallorca’s hotel industry is joining a €366,000 drive to tackle staff absence, with a new study planned across accommodation, restaurants and nightlife. Employers and trade unions met in Palma on Tuesday, 22 September, to discuss projects that can seek funding under the Balearic Government scheme. Labour Minister Catalina Cabrer and the Director General for Labour and Occupational Health, María de la Luz Moreno, set out how the grants will work.

The money is for the running costs of observatories set up by employer and union organisations entitled to negotiate the Balearic hotel sector’s collective agreement. It covers work on staff absence, equality and balancing work and family life. Applications opened on 8 September after the call was published in the Official Gazette of the Balearic Islands on 5 September.

FEHM prepares staff absence study

The Mallorca Hoteliers Federation, FEHM, plans a detailed study of staff absence in the sectors covered by the agreement. It aims to establish the scale of absence, examine its causes and track how it changes over time.

FEHM will provide the observatory with data from accommodation, catering and nightlife businesses, then share the study’s findings with employers and union representatives. The aim is to give both sides the same evidence before they draw up an action plan and later assess whether any measures work.

The federation says the observatory’s work will also feed into negotiations on the next hotel-sector collective agreement.

Next meeting planned for March

The observatory was formally created on 24 November 2025 and held its first working meeting on 9 April 2026. It brings together employer and union bodies from different islands.

Its next meeting is due in March, once the study data are available. The new grant scheme also allows organisations to submit their own technical and research projects aimed at the needs of the labour market.
