Ibiza club closing parties: 312 drivers test positive
Ibiza, in the Balearic Islands: officers file 312 reports against drivers who test positive for alcohol or drugs during the big nightclubs’ closing parties. Spain’s Civil Guard announces the figure on 16 October after completing a special road-safety operation. Officers also arrest a driver who tries to flee an alcohol checkpoint.
Patrols stop his car after he drives recklessly to get away. He then strongly resists the officers, the Civil Guard says.
The checks focus on main roads and routes into nightlife areas. Officers aim to spot dangerous driving linked to alcohol or drugs while the island draws large numbers of local people and international visitors.
Beyond the 312 reports, officers investigate six drivers for road-safety offences. Two have alcohol readings high enough to constitute a criminal offence; four drive without a licence. With the arrested driver, seven people face investigation or arrest. The Civil Guard says the offences put both drivers and other road users at risk and carry penalties under Spain’s Criminal Code.
