Mallorca: Balearic panel backs 19 May Islands Day bid
In Palma, Mallorca, 19 May moves a step closer to becoming International Islands Day: a Balearic Parliament committee unanimously backs the proposal on Wednesday. People’s Party member Maria de Lluc puts forward the bid. The vote does not create a new international day; the committee wants Spain’s government to seek its formal recognition through UNESCO and the United Nations.
The committee also recognises the educational, environmental and social value of the international ‘Let’s Save the Islands’ project, led by IES Bendinat with other schools.
At the same meeting, the committee approves every part of a proposal from Socialist member Omar Lamín on funding for global cooperation in the Balearic Islands. It calls on the Balearic government and other island institutions to increase resources for the organisations doing that work. It also asks them not to cut the 2026 cooperation budget and to maintain the funding level proposed to the Cooperation Council last December.
The committee wants stable funding for island funds involved in decentralised cooperation. It also calls for continued bilateral work with partner countries in the south and education that helps people recognise global injustices.
