Sa Pobla justice of the peace pick sparks PP bias claim
In Sa Pobla, Mallorca, Joan Villalonga is not getting another term as justice of the peace: the council has chosen someone else. On Wednesday 4 November, the local People's Party (PP) accused mayor Biel Ferragut of passing him over because he belongs to the party. It wants Ferragut to explain the decision.
Villalonga had put himself forward again after four years in the role. Local PP spokeswoman Pedrona Seguí defended his work and said commitment to the town should count for more than party allegiance. She also said a mayor must govern for everyone.
The PP is asking Ferragut to set out the reasons for the choice and guarantee respect for the council as an institution. Its statement gives no reason from the council for selecting someone else.
