Mallorca crash: five hurt, driver fails test

Five people were taken to hospital after a seven-vehicle crash on the Ma-13 near Palma, Mallorca. The collision happened at 08.45 on Thursday, just before the Son Fuster exit towards Palma. The 63-year-old lorry driver, who tested positive for alcohol, is due before a court at midday on Friday.

The lorry struck several vehicles, leaving the middle and right lanes blocked and traffic backed up for up to four kilometres. Two of those taken to Son Espases, Son Llàtzer and Juaneda hospitals were less seriously hurt, while three had minor injuries.

A further 12 people received medical treatment at the scene and were discharged there.

The Guardia Civil arrested the driver after officers said they saw clear signs that he was under the influence of alcohol. He is suspected of offences against road safety and serious disobedience.

The Guardia Civil Traffic Group is investigating the multi-vehicle crash. Sources close to the inquiry said one possible explanation is that the driver lost control of the lorry because of his condition.
