Mallorca car cap: Parliament weighs entry law

Private and hire cars on Mallorca could face a maximum number under a bill reaching Parliament in Palma, Mallorca, on Wednesday, 9 September. Deputies will decide whether to take the vehicle-entry proposal forward. The Consell de Mallorca approved the text in June.

Island president Llorenç Galmés will present the bill. The Consell says it expects to set the maximum number of private and hire vehicles allowed to drive on Mallorca before the end of the year.

Cap could apply in 2027

The PP believes Parliament could give the law final approval in October or November. It could then take effect for the 2027 tourist season.

MÉS per Mallorca says it will vote to take the proposal forward. Vox plans to abstain.

Nursery pay and energy drinks also on agenda

Deputies will also vote on two decree laws passed by the Balearic Government in August. One includes plans to bring the pay of educators at non-integrated, publicly funded nursery schools known as escoletes into line with colleagues at other centres.

The Xarxa 0-3 network and the CCOO, UGT and STEI unions have called a protest outside Parliament. They accuse employers in the 0-3 sector of blocking talks on a regional agreement and demand a sector panel at the Education Ministry, as well as an urgent review of minimum rules.

The other decree law would ban the sale of energy drinks to under-18s. Businesses that break the rule could face fines of between 6,000 and 60,000 euros.
